Be Fire Safe as Cooler Temperatures Approach

September is a fun time in the Truckee Meadows.  One of my favorite special events is the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off that takes place through Labor Day. This weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. The mornings are offering a tease of autumn, and our minds begin to shift to cooler temperatures.

It is important to remember however, that we remain in the wildfire season.

The heavy winter of 2017 coupled with the wet spring of 2018 have brought wildland fuels 200-300 percent of average. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) remains on high alert. Please do not become complacent with cooler weather, and avoid outdoor activities that could start a fire. And remember that pile burning is currently prohibited in Washoe County, to include campfires and bonfires.

Becoming “fire safe” is a community effort, and we are grateful to all our residents who comply and support efforts to prevent wildfires. Our worst fires in recent memory have occurred late in the year.

The Fire District will announce upcoming Green Waste Collection Days soon. The event will allow you an opportunity to dispose of dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other wildland fuels in an effort to create a defensible space to protect your home and property from wildfires.

And speaking of the Rib Cook-off, keep in mind a few barbecue and grilling safety tips to keep you and your family safe.

  • Grill away from structures and overhangs including trees
  • Keep your grill clean
  • Make sure your grill is stable
  • Have a fire extinguisher or water close by

The National Fire Protection Association has more tips here.

If you haven’t already done so, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@TMFPD) for the latest news and information from Truckee Meadows Fire.

The skies are graced next weekend with the Balloon Races at San Rafael Regional Park. After this spectacular event, we are greeted with the sounds of the Reno Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport. I hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy one or all of these unique events.

On behalf of the TMFPD Board of Fire Commissioners, Fire Chief Charles Moore, and all the men and women of the Fire District, thank you for all you do to make northern Nevada the very special place it is this Labor Day.
