Flood Project Update

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) – lead federal agency for the Truckee River Flood Management Project (Flood Project) – recently released the draft General Reevaluation Report (GRR) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for public review and comment. The documents are available online at: http://www.spk.usace.army.mil/Media/USACEProjectPublicNotices.aspx.

The Truckee River Flood Management Authority (TRFMA), in partnership with the Corps, will host two public meetings to discuss the Flood Project and draft reports.

The first meeting is set for:
Wednesday, June 12, 2013
from 5:00PM to 7:00PM
at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center, in downtown Reno

The second meeting will take place on:
Wednesday, June 19, 2013
from 1:00PM to 3:00PM
in the City of Sparks Council Chambers

Stakeholders are welcome to attend these meetings and encouraged to submit written comments to the Corps.

Note that the Corps’ reports propose a flood risk management plan designed to provide 50-year level of protection. If this plan is approved by Corps Headquarters and authorized by Congress, the Flood Project would be eligible to receive approximately $150 million in federal funding for construction. While TRFMA supports the Corps’ efforts to secure this federal funding, the agency is working strategically with its lobbyists to revise the Corps’ plan to provide 100-year level of flood protection for our community.
