January 29th – Parks Foundation Public Forum on Rosewood Lakes Plan
What: Nature Study Area (Rosewood Lakes Golf Course)
Where: 6800 Pembroke Drive, Reno 89502
When: Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 6pm – 8pm
The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation invited stakeholders and the community to explore the future of the 219-acre site, known as Rosewood Lakes Golf Course, located on the south/west corner of the Pembroke/Veteran Parkway intersection. It is owned by the City of Reno, which has determined that the former golf course is no longer feasible due the construction of Veterans Parkway. The property is one of the last vestiges of wetland habitat that is to define the Truckee Meadows before European-American settlement in the 19th century.
A Nature Study Area design workshop took place at the “Rosewood Lakes Club House” on October 24 from 9 am – 3 pm to explore the future of this site, which includes wetland areas, as well as infrastructure. There were representatives from all agencies in the RenoSparks area. Department of Fish & Wildlife, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Airport Authority, Urban Forester for City of Reno, UNR/Biology, BLM, Landscape Architects, National Park Service-Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance Program, NV State Parks, Scenic Nevada, Nevada Bugs & Butterflies, Pyramid Lake Wetland, Reno Parks & Recreation, Park Planner, Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Rosewood Lakes HOA and Hidden Valley Homeowners Association was represented.
The consensus was that the area should remain as a wetland and serve as a water retention area in case of a flood. Most of the existing trails will be used, but a few new paths will have to be built to connect the trail system. The area will be used for educational purposes for schools and individuals with information boards located throughout the park. Most of the area, if not all, will be walking paths, no bicycles since there is a bike-path along Veterans Parkway. No dogs will be allowed, in order not to disturb the wildlife.
Please feel free to join the meeting on January 29, 2020 at 6:00 pm.
