Concrete paving operations continue at the intersection of Sparks Boulevard and Greg Street. Sparks Boulevard is currently closed to southbound traffic from the I-80 eastbound off-ramp to Greg Street, and left turns from eastbound Greg Street to northbound Sparks Boulevard are also prohibited. The road closure and left turn restrictions began Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm and are scheduled to continue until Monday, July 22, 2013 at 6:00 am. The closure is needed for the safety of workers and motorists during concrete paving operations and to allow time to achieve the required concrete strength prior to traffic being allowed on the new roadway section.
NV Energy is currently constructing a temporary shoofly to reroute electrical power lines and make way for construction of the bridge over Clean Water Way. Additionally, work to relocate the radio towers south of Clean Water Way to their new location to the north is anticipated to begin this month.
Drilled shaft operations south of the Truckee River for the Veterans Memorial Bridge continue and are anticipated to be complete by the end of the month. Construction of the bridge piers south of the river is also underway with the southernmost pier (Pier 1) completed. Crews are preparing to set forms and install rebar for the construction of the south bridge abutment.
Preparations are also being made to begin the construction of pier caps. The pier cap is a bridge component that transfers loads from the bridge superstructure (the part of the bridge which supports traffic) to the bridge piers.

The SEC is an important and significant regional investment in the Truckee Meadows that addresses long-term transportation needs to improve safety and mobility of people, goods, and services in the Reno/Sparks area. Once complete, the new roadway will stretch 5.5 miles from the intersection of Greg St. and Sparks Blvd. to the intersection of Veterans Pkwy and South Meadows Pkwy. The project is being built in two phases. Phase 1 is constructing the roadway from Sparks Blvd. to just south of Clean Water Way including a bridge over the Truckee River. Design for the second phase of work is currently under development and will complete the roadway from south of Clean Water Way to the South Meadows Pkwy/Veterans Pkwy intersection. Construction of the second phase is anticipated to begin in spring 2014, pending completion of the final design and obtaining the required environmental permits. Total project investment is estimated at $230 – $250 million.
